FAQ

Who are you?
I’m an independent Certified Financial Planner (CFP) and Owner of an independent financial
planning practice.

What is an “independent” advisor?
Independent typically means “not employed by a bank”. As an independent advisor, I’m not
required to recommend inferior in-house investments. My recommendations are my own.
I also own my practice, so my employers are my clients. I work for you!

What do you do?
We provide clients with well-rounded financial advice during the evolving stages of their lives.
Our core services are financial planning, investments and insurance planning.

What differentiates you from other financial advisors?
Experience. Many advisors have never managed money during a financial crisis, since the last
one occurred 10 years ago, in 2008. For over 25 years, I’ve successfully managed investments through both good and bad times, with a focus on long-term results and downside protection.
Immigrant Success Story. I relocated from Hong Kong in 1995 with an expertise in a
specialized field. But, after accepting a job offer from a major Canadian bank, I embarked on a new, existing career path which led to the creation of my own financial planning practice over 15 years ago. Life Cycle Approach. Many advisors miss the important differences that arise during the different stages of your life – early years, middle working years and retirement.
I specialize in providing financial advice that is specific to the life-stage you’re in, and prepare
you for the next stage as well.

What is a Certified Financial Planner (CFP) and how does that help me?
Most investment advisors focus primarily on investments. What is missing is an objective to
build your wealth through tax-smart strategies and an objective to preserve your wealth.
A Certified Financial Planner designation is the “gold standard” of financial planning and
demonstrates an expertise in assisting clients with financial matters beyond just investments.

Which languages do you speak?
My team and I are fluent in Mandarin, Cantonese and English, and we’re happy to communicate with you, your family and your friends, in the language each of you feel most comfortable.

How can you help me in retirement?
One of the biggest financial myths told to retirees is to calculate future expenses based on your current lifestyle. I’ll introduce you to a far more sensible concept, to help you manage your cash flow more accurately for your actual lifestyle and, later on, your future lifestyle as well.

Do you offer tax planning? Why is it important?
Tax is the largest expense for most families, so minimizing your tax burden will increase your
net worth. I’ll share some investment tax strategies with you, to reduce your tax obligation.

Do you work with the children and parents of your clients?
Yes. As a Life Cycle advisor, I address life-stage concerns, which mean I can prepare them for
the age-specific financial concerns that will arise over time.

How can you help me with my mortgage?
Banks offer only their own mortgages, which means you may not get the best rate available,
which could wind up costing you thousands of dollars.
I can introduce you to an independent mortgage broker, who works with many mortgage
providers, which means you’ll have a wider variety of rates to choose from.

How can you help me with my insurance needs?
Many insurance agents can only offer insurance policies from their own employer, so they have a limited selection. This disadvantage may be costly to you. As an independent Insurance Agent and Financial Planner, I have access to the top insurers in Canada. And I’ll be your guide to determining whether insurance is required or what type.

What is your investment philosophy?
I believe that no single advisor in Canada can match the combined expertise, access to
information and industry relationships established by the top professional investment teams.

What is your investment strategy?
I focus on where I have the greatest impact, which is designing global investment portfolios with proven investment teams.

Who is Investia?
Every licensed investment advisor in Canada is required to work with what’s known as an
investment dealer.

I elect to work with Investia Financial Services because they’re one of Canada’s largest
financial services firms and they share our values. They’re owned by IA Financial, best known
as the owner of Industrial Alliance, Canada’s 4th largest insurance company.
I also like their stability. IA Group was founded in 1892, so they’ve been providing financial
services for almost 120 years, making them one of Canada’s oldest financial institutions.
